Dr. Susanne Brander is an Associate Professor at Oregon State University in the college of Agricultural Sciences, the Fisheries and Wildlife Department and Coastal Oregon Marine Experiment Station. The Brander Lab encompasses the fields of toxicology, endocrinology, and ecology, integrating molecular approaches with measurements at the organism and population level. The lab's main focus is on the effects of stressors such as emerging pollutants such as micro/nanoplastics and pesticides, as well as changing climate on aquatic organisms.

Some of Dr. Brander's recent papers on health effects of microplastics include:

  • Development and application of a health-based framework for informing regulatory action in relation to exposure of microplastic particles in California drinking water. (2022).Coffin S, Bouwmeester H, Brander S, Damdimopoulou P, Gouin T, Hermabessiere L, Khan E, Koelmans AA, Lemieux CL, Teerds K, Wagner M, Weisberg SB, Wright S. Microplast nanoplast. 2022;2(1):12.
  • Research recommendations to better understand the potential health impacts of microplastics to humans and aquatic ecosystems. (2022). Thornton Hampton, L.M., Bouwmeester, H., Brander, S.M. et al. Micropl.&Nanopl. 2, 18.
  • Critical gaps in nanoplastics research and their connection to risk assessment.(2023). Cunningham, B. E., Sharpe, E. E., Brander, S. M., Landis, W. G., & Harper, S. L.  Frontiers in toxicology5, 1154538. https://doi.org/10.3389/ftox.2023.1154538
