Dr. Heather Bischel is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Davis working in the areas of water quality and resource-oriented sanitation. Her research aims to protect and improve environmental and human health through sustainable water, sanitation, and resource recovery. Current research projects in her laboratory include: development and implementation of rapid virus monitoring for wastewater surveillance and water reuse; use of environmental proteomic approaches to assess bioaccumulation and biotransformation of PFAS and pesticides; and low-cost technology development that harnesses microorganisms and insects to safely recover resources from human waste. She received a BS from the University of California, Berkeley, and an MS and Ph.D from Stanford University.
Dr. Lauren Matelski received her BA from the University of Colorado, Boulder in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology, and completed her PhD in Immunology at the University of California, Davis under the guidance of Dr. Judy Van de Water. She is currently a Postdoctoral Scholar in the lab of Dr. Pamela Lein at UC Davis, studying the effects of maternal immune and environmental factors on neuronal endpoints using human cell culture models. The overall goal of this work is to develop a robust human co-culture model system for screening interactions between environmental chemicals and inflammatory mediators that modulate neurodevelopmental endpoints of relevance to Autism Spectrum Disorder.
